Example of a Complex Grid question type using images as the row prompts.

In the above example the respondent is asked to rank each browser, rate on eease of use, and say whether or not they would pay for the browser if it charged..

 

The settings that created the above example are explained in detail below.

 

 

Question Elements:

 

Enter the Name and Label of the question in the text boxes.  Then enter:

 

Question_text:  Enter the question text by clicking on the Question Text icon.  A rich text editor box appears where you type your question. You have full rich text control over the question formatting.

 

 

instruction_text: Enter the instruction text by clicking on the Instruction text icon.  A rich text editor box appears where you type your instructions. You have full rich text control over the question formatting.

 

 

page_break: Causes the following question to appear on a new screen (default) Un-click this box to turn off Page Break and cause the questions to appear on the same screen or page, one under each other.

 

 

mandatory: If this box is checked then the question must be answered by the respondent to continue with the survey.  Note the default setting is ‘True’.

 

 

Add The Questions (that will appear as the column headings)

Add the question headings by clicking on one of the four options to determine how you want the question heading to appear as.  The four options are:

 

add_text_answer Add Text Answer:  The first icon allows you to enter an un-formatted text column heading.  You can cut and paste the text into these column heading boxes from MS Word without worrying about the Word formatting coming across.  The default theme formatting will be applied which is suitable in most cases.

 

add_answer_images Add Answer Images: The second option opens the image library.  Select the images you wish to use in the column heading.

 

add_rich_text Add Rich Text Answer: The third option allows you to create a rich text column heading.  Clicking on this icon creates a placeholder - you then click on this placeholder to open the rich text editor and type in and format your column heading.

 

add_answer_frame Add Answer Frame:  Clicking this icon will open a pop up text box that will enable you to cut and paste all your column headings from another document in one go.  Each column heading must be on a separate line.  Any document formatting from the original document will be deleted.

 

 

Determine what type of question each column is going to be by selecting it from the drop down..

The five question types available to complex grid are:

 

NOTE:  Each of the five available question types for the columns are standard question types available in SMP and contain a limited set of options and parameters that need to be set to create each column question.

 

 

Ranking: Creates a rank question type similar to the current 'Ranking' question type.  Clicking on the drop down arrow reveals the following parameters.

Min Ranking Number: Enter a number to indicate the least number of items a respondent must rank.

 

 

Min Ranking Number: Enter a number to indicate the maximun number of items a respondent is allowed to rank.

 

Title Row Color: Click on the color palette icon color_icon to cause the color palette pop up to appear.  Then use this to select the color you wish the background color of the column heading to be.

 

Title Font Color: Click on the color palette icon color_icon to cause the color palette pop up to appear.  Then use this to select the color you wish the font of the column heading to be.

 

 

 

 

Text Answer:  Creates a text box answer type allowing the respondent to comment on each row item.

Numeric Answer:  Create a numeric answer type box.

Total:

 

Max:  Determines the maximum score rating for the scale.

 

Min:  Determines the minimum score rating for the scale.

 

Dec:  Determines the number of decimals for the score rating.  Type the number in the box

 

Total:  Determines the total that the combined score ratings must sum to.

 

Symbol:  Inserts a symbol after the each box such as a dollar symbol when collecteing currency amounts etc.

Scale:  Creates a scale type question type

Min:  Sets the lower limit of the scale you wish to use.

 

Max:  Sets the upper limit of the scale you wish to use.

 

Dec: Determines the number of decimal places the data is collected in.

Grid (Matrix):  Creates a single or multi select answer type with a number of answers to choose from.

MultiSelect:  Check this box to make the question multi select - i.e. the respondent can select more than one answer.

 

Column Headings:  Adds and formats the answers that the respondent can select from in this column

 

add_text_answer Add Answer Text:  Click to add another answer option.  Each time this option is selected a new answer box appears.

 

clip0107Exclusive: Causes an answer to be exclusive - that is, if many answers have been selected in a multi-select question those other selections will be un-checked when the exclusive answer is clicked on.  You can have more than one exclusive answer in an answer frame however clicking on an exclusive answer after clicking on a previously clicked on exclusive answer will un-check that previous answer.  Most often used for answers like "None".

 

clip0495Answer Value Column: Set the values you want to appear in the data extract for each possible answer in your question.

Label each question in the highlighted text boxes.  This is the label that will be used in your grid columns.

Add The Answer Stimuli You Want Answers For (The Rows)

 

Add the answers that you want to appear for each row heading.

The formatting controls included are:

 

answers_name Answer name:  Click to input the names you wish to give each question which will also appear in the data extract when you download the data.

 

fix_position Fix position:  Click on this option to select the columns that you wish to lock in position when using the randomize option.  For example you may wish to lock an answer such as Not Applicable as the last column.
